The proposition for architects and clients is in the benefit of consolidating electrical functions in a building into one simple to use, aesthetically pleasing, interface for the occupier - really all about reducing the clutter of junk that can end up as an embarrassing eyesore on a wall. If this is specified by the architect early on as one of the design choices for the client, then it is not left to the electrician, plumber, window and audio people to all do their own thing, no doubt with best intentions, but resulting in a messy end result in what is otherwise a beautiful building.
