Mark McKenna

Mark is NDY’s Global Sustainability Group Leader and joined the company in 2011. He oversees NDY’s multi-national team of sustainability consultants and has fundamental role in shaping the company approach and strategic direction. Mark has overall responsibility for group performance and reports directly into NDY group executive committee.
Mark has a deep appreciation for sustainability issues, from macro-trends and policy, to sustainable design and research-led solutions. He has significant experience leading high profile projects, programs and advisory services internationally. Mark‘s diverse career experience includes architecture, government advisory, research and engineering and this enables him to operate at all levels within Client organisations. His experience includes expert advisory services Client-side for major infrastructure projects such as ICC Sydney and the Optus Stadium, through to delivering sustainable design solutions across healthcare, commercial, retail, sports and infrastructure sectors. Most recently, Mark has been working with Clients to deliver Net Zero Energy Building (NZEB) status in Australia.

The global push towards developing Net Zero Buildings (NZEB) has already begun – but the definition of NZEB remains unclear to many within the property sector. Terms such as ‘zero carbon’, ‘net zero energy’ and ‘zero energy’ are used interchangeably and yet all provide a different outcome.

Several significant challenges exist to achieving NZEB status including; local climate, property sub-sector (e.g. commercial, residential), available technology, delivery method and cost.
